At first glance, one might even fail to notice that sitting among the elders is a young boy. Painted in matching red robes, it would be difficult to say that the Christ child looks out of place. That is precisely the artistry of this painting: To make what should seem to be a bizzare scene, look supernaturally natural.
Perhaps it took a second glance for even Mary and Joseph to realise as well.
