Christ Carrying the Cross

1565

Pray the sorrowful mysteries of the rosary with baroque art.

I: Allow the penetrating gaze of Christ to pierce through you. as he sees through all your brokenness, the same brokenness that now pierces him.

II: Draw your eyes to the single tear Christ sheds. Despite our Lord’s agony, he weeps not for his own suffering, but for yours.

III: Even as he bears the suffering of the world, our Lord looks directly at you, and this single tear, He sheds just for you.

IV: He has called us each by name, and suffered for us each by name.

V: Draw your eyes to Simon of Cyrene. Observe how even in his helping, he still appears to be weighing down on the cross.

VI: Even as we strive for holiness, Christ still bears the weight of our sin.

VII: Spiritual pride often leads us to think that we’d be the ones ‘helping’ our Lord to carry his cross. But Christ does not call us to help.

He calls us to follow.

VIII: The man who walked on water did not need the help of Simon. But rather, this is how he shows us, what we are called to do.

IX: If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.

X: Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
