Christ on the Mount of Olives

~1630-1632

Pray the sorrowful mysteries of the rosary with baroque art.

I: Place yourself in this moment in time. The soldiers have just arrived. His friends, fast asleep. These are the final, lonely, moments of our Lord, before the events of the passion begin.

II: We can only imagine the agony he’s been enduring in the hours that lead up to this moment. As he tells his disciples, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death.”

III: Reflect on this agony as you draw your eyes to the reddish tint on our Lord’s face, recall the words of scripture, “His sweat became like great drops of blood.”

IV: Know that there is nothing in this life we can go through, that can compare to the extremities of mental anguish we now see Christ experiencing. Let alone, what is come next.

V: Yet, Christ surrenders completely to the Father. “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as thou will.”

VI: Draw your eyes to the hands of Our Lord. Notice the two completely different shades of each hand. Contemplate on the perfect union between the Father and the Son.

VII: This, is the perfect image of total cooperation with God’s will, the perfect model of submission we are called to strive towards.

VIII: And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him. Gaze upon the angel, and remember that God is always listening. But will you listen to Him?

IX: Gaze upon the cup as you call to mind the trials you are called to surrender to His will. Pray for the strength to be obedient to His will, no matter the cost.

X: Even a thousand prayers cannot rival a single act of surrender.
