Le Printemps ou Le Paradis terrestre

1660-1664

Do you notice what’s missing in this Adam and Eve painting?

No snake. No animals. Just… silence.

As God seemingly looks the other away.

Most paintings tend to show the serpent tempting Eve.

But here? No serpent is needed.

There’s a perfectly good tree right next to them.

But they choose the forbidden one anyway.

Adam isn’t resisting. He’s lounging about, thinking, letting, Eve convince him.
Eve on the other hand, is already in motion—like the decision has already been made.

And here’s the real kicker—up in the sky we see God with his back turned away, as though on purpose, in full view of Adam and Eve.

Do you know how sometimes you admit something to your parents, only to realize… they already knew?

That’s exactly what’s happening here.

Adam and Eve are making a choice.

And God is letting them.

And isn’t this all of us?

So what do you think—was the Fall really about temptation?

Or was it about free will all along?
